Today there are almost 5 million visits per year to the sites and museums devoted to D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. There are 51 places which can be explored to remember, understand and commemorate the memory of those who gave their lives for Freedom in 1944. 2024 will see the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This major event will once again bring many Heads of State together in ceremonies paying homage to the last surviving veterans of all nationalities. In the meantime, 2019 will see a fine commemorative and festive event around 6 June to celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.
6 June 2019 – a date for the diary! The people of Normandy still have vivid memories of the summer of 1944 and would not dream of missing the anniversary. The celebrations will take the form of freedom concerts, fireworks, a giant picnic, parachute jumps, a march for peace, a flyover by the national air display team Patrouille de France, and visits by several overseas Heads of State for official commemorations at the different D-Day beaches and sectors. The Normandy D-Day Festival, the festivities which accompany the official ceremonies, takes place every year around 6 June with a programme of events stretching from Utah Beach to Sword Beach.
